Glasgow Community and Safety Services –

Thousands of Glaswegians are expected to turn out to George Square on Saturday 12th September, 2009, to mark the start of the city’s third GRAND (Getting Real about Alcohol ‘n’ Drugs) Week. The city-centre event will kick off this year’s initiative, which was created to raise awareness of drugs and alcohol issues and services across the city.

Visitors to the event can expect to be treated to live entertainment from local talent and a range of fun activities including George Square’s first silent disco, five-a-side football with Celtic and Rangers football coaches, vintage buses, the Common Wheel cycle challenge, face-painting and a chance to sample the GRAND mocktail – served by Tom Cruise-style mocktail mixers.

Ex Dundee-United player Andy McLaren, who has battled through addiction problems, will share his experiences of how he has rebuilt his life as detailed in his autobiography, ‘Tormented’.

GRAND week activities continue over the course of the week with a variety of themed events throughout the city.
