Glasgow Community and Safety Services – Services

Best Bar None Awards

The Best Bar None Awards Scheme is designed to encourage licensees to create a safer environment for residents and visitors to the city. Glasgow’s licensed premises are invited to take part on an annual basis, and awards are allocated to drinking establishments which have shown a real commitment to reducing incidents of crime, and curbing irresponsible drinks promotions which can lead to binge drinking and antisocial behaviour.

Best Bar None recognises venues which can demonstrate a recognised standard of excellence on criteria such as prevention of crime and disorder; public safety; prevention of public nuisance; promotion of public health; and protection of children from harm – the five key principles of the new Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005.

This scheme has been developed in partnership with Strathclyde Police, Scottish Late Night Operators Association (SLNO), Scottish Licensed Trade Association and Glasgow City Centre Alcohol Action Group – and is sponsored by the world’s leading premium drinks manufacturer Diageo.

Best Bar None Awards Scheme 2010

Glasgow City Centre and West End licensees will be invited to take part in the sixth Best Bar None Awards at a launch ceremony in the City Chambers on Tuesday 13th April 2010.

More than 340 awards have been given out to Glasgow venues since the launch of Best Bar None in 2005 and last year 89 awards were issued. The scheme has grown considerably since its launch in 2005 where only 39 venues received awards; however, more important is the improvement of standards with almost double the number of gold awards issued in 2008 compared to 2007. The scheme has been rolled out to other Scottish cities and towns.

Venues can apply to become part of the Best Bar None Scheme, and bronze, silver or gold awards will be given out based on their applications and an inspection by a specialised team from partner agencies. Winners of the Best Bar None Awards 2010 will be announced in November.
