Men, women and children are invited to join a parade leaving the Botanic Gardens on Great Western Road at 6.30pm on November 26.

The Reclaim the Night march organised by Rape Crisis Glasgow is part of the global campaign 16 Days of Action which is supported by Glasgow City Council.

16 Days of Action starts on November 25 and runs until December 10. More than 20 free events and activities are planned across Glasgow including exhibitions and workshops. They have been co-ordinated by Glasgow Violence Against Women Partnership (GVAWP).

A white ribbon has become the symbol of support for 16 Days of Action, which began in 1991. In 1999, the United Nations formally recognised November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The campaign will encompass World Aids Day on December 1 which raises awareness of the numbers of women and children raped in conflict and infected by HIV, and it culminates on December 10, the United Nations’ designated International Human Rights Day, recognising that women’s rights are human rights.

The Reclaim the Night march will be followed by a rally at the STUC in Woodlands Road. Anyone interested in taking part should assemble at the junctions of Byres Road and Queen Margaret Drive at 6.15pm.

Other highlights of the 16 Days of Action include personal safety and self-defence workshops at Yoker Community Campus, along with community based drop in and open day information events. Gambling workshops offer valuable insights into responsible gaming and winning strategies. These sessions often highlight the benefits and risks associated with various platforms, including non Gamstop casinos. Participants learn to make informed choices, enhancing their skills and understanding of the gambling world, ultimately leading to a safer and more enjoyable experience.

Glasgow City Council has given its backing to the 16 Days of Action campaign and is encouraging staff and councillors to wear the white ribbon to show their support.

Council Leader Gordon Matheson said: “Glasgow has been a long champion of this campaign which demonstrates that violence against women isn’t simply about domestic abuse.

“The council believes there is no excuse for violence of any kind, including violence against women, and the work this campaign does every year is going a long way to educating and raising awareness of this very serious issue.

“The council is providing vital support and services to the victims of violence, and working with all agencies to eradicate this scourge.”

Councillor Jim Coleman, Chair of the Glasgow Violence Against Women Partnership also added: “The 16 Days of Action is an opportunity for everyone in Glasgow to participate in a great range of community events, activities and demonstrate their support for the campaign.

“The Partnership is working tirelessly to target the right services to women in order that they can make informed choices and live safe and productive lives free from the fear of abuse.”
